Wayland Business Association EventNews SummaryFall 2010Holiday Baskets for Local Elderly Residents. The holiday baskets are prepared each year in early December and distributed by WBA members to 30 elderly Wayland residents. The bags include some non-perishable food items as well as gift certificates and coupons for local businesses. WBA members traditionally contribute to these “baskets.” It doesn’t have to be something big, but whatever you can contribute would be very much appreciated by the people who receive the baskets. Please consider what you might contribute to this worthy effort. We strongly encourage members who have not taken part in this effort in the past or members whose businesses might provide something different to the mix of items. And thank you in advance! Wayland Reads. Wayland Reads is a community-wide reading event sponsored by the Wayland Public Library. The goal is to bring the community together over a shared literary experience. This year’s book selection is Zeitoun, by Dave Eggers. It is a non-fiction account of one man and his family’s experience in New Orleans during and after Hurricane Katrina. People taking part in the month-long event will be issued a Wayland Reads button as well as a Program Guide that will list all participating businesses. The button will entitle them to discounts or giveaways at supporting businesses during March 2011. Offers like a free drink with purchase of a sandwich, or $5 or 10% off one or more of your services. The offers will be limited to March 2011 and you can include other restrictions, if necessary. Wayland Reads will provide an 8 ½ by 11 inch Wayland Reads Zeitoun poster if appropriate. Participating businesses will also be listed on the Wayland Reads page of the Wayland Library website: www.waylandlibrary.org. An added bonus, if you choose to participate in Wayland Reads yourself, is that it will be an opportunity to interact with customers and clients in a way that will reinforce their connection and loyalty to your business. For more information please contact Sally Cartwright, Chair, Wayland Reads 2011, at cartwrights@comcast.net, 508-653-2642. Deadline to be included in the Wayland Reads 2011 discount button program is January 1, 2011. A New Home for WayCAM. As most of you know, WayCAM, Wayland’s own local access TV station, is located at the high school. Now that the school is being rebuilt there is a need to find a new home. Article 5 at the upcoming Special Town Meeting will take up that issue. If passed, the article authorizes the Selectmen to lease space, currently called the Weight Room, following a required RFP process. It will then be renovated at WayCAM's expense, for a new studio. WBA members who are residents of Wayland are encouraged to become familiar with the article and attend the meeting to vote on the article. WayCAM is not only a local resource but is also a member of the WBA. For more information on the STM article and WayCAM contact Ken Isaacson, President, and Chair, Board of Directors, WayCAM. ken@waycam.tv Wayland Welcome Wagon. Wayland does not have a welcome wagon program – but it should! What better way of introducing new residents to our members than through a package of offers and materials before they establish their shopping patterns? The package will include coupons and promotional items from contributing businesses as well as a WBA directory. This WBA program will be limited to member businesses and will debut in January. Even if you are not prepared to offer a formal discount, consider a one-page flyer promoting your business. There are three ways to take part. First, consider an offer or discount for new residents you would like to have included in the gift box. Second, log into the website and check your business listing. It is your responsibility to make sure it is accurate and up to date; if you have problems with that please get in touch with me, Cliff Kolovson, or Lisa Shapiro. Third, we are considering having WBA members deliver the packages to new residents personally, providing a unique opportunity for those members to introduce themselves to these new residents. There will be a notice in early December providing more details and explaining how to get your business into the package. If you are interested in helping with the program, please let me know. We want to make this program fresh and different so please think outside the box about your contribution! Upcoming WBA dates to remember: December 7th: Networking event at Out of Asia. 5-8 PM Details to follow. With the Special Town Meeting starting at 7:30 just up the street at the Middle School there is no reason to miss dinner for that meeting. I hope to see many of you Tuesday night!
